Waiting

WAITING

waiting for footsteps to sound in the hall,
candles burnt low and wine tepid,
i knew you would not come this night or any other,
you, who like a whirlwind ride, left me giddy, dizzy and wired,
now leave me simply tired.... of the lingering emptiness
after the rush, and hovering doubts about your intent,
i, simply one of too many who had tried to please,
and sadly, it seems, never could quite suceed.
i, turning out lights and locking the door,
am glad to be sleeping tonite again alone,
convinced it is all hype, the notion of love
so empowered as to defeat this sterile solitude
and hardly worth another of my naive attempts.
still, i'm oddly surprised, that of all the sparkling gifts
littered by your sweeping entrance into my rooms,
it is these, your bitter cynicism and indifference,
i choose to guard closely next to my heart,
and let color my dreams and plans, both cherished and lost,
i, no longer the girl who waited expectantly,
desirous for that special one destined to come,
that hope, and others, as lost to me as are you,
so well taught am i by your clear tutelage.
