Three Years Hence

THREE YEARS HENCE

where will you be three years hence?
it will not be so long that you will
have forgotten all we were that day.
the rumble of the train over the bridge,
the opaque fog obscurring up ahead
and echos in the tunnel of loud wheels,
all those may slip into memory's decay.
what of how we kissed then in the dark
even in that crowded passanger car
and how we laughed at getting caught?
will you remember later that night
on the path slanting down to the sea
and all the promises i tenderly made,
while the tide secretly crept too high?
can you neglect to recall that despirate
embrace, the feel of my lips on yours,
trembling flesh you eagerly caressed,
the taste of my tears at your goodbye?
will you replay my last words of love?
certainly i'll linger some on your mind,
at least for a time, although i know
it meant less to you, a brief interlude,
a summer's holiday in a stange town,
and i just another of your pretty toys.
all that wonder of discovery and joy,
of pleasures shared to me will forever
be distilled to a sharp pang of regret.
